Immunisation, critical component of Nigeria’s health system – Bill Gates

Bill Gates
Founder of Microsoft and Co-Founder of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Mr. Bill Gates, has described immunisation of children as “the most important component of Nigeria’s health system.”

He stated this on Monday evening in Abuja during the inauguration of the National Routine Immunisation Strategic Plan.

The event was attended by the Sultan of Sokoto,  Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar; officials of the United Nations Children’s Fund, World Health Organisation, Save the Children, among others.

Gates said, “Nothing is more important in health system in Nigeria than giving immunisation to children and persons in order to prevent diseases.”

According to him, the manner in which immunisation programmes have been implemented had been very slow.

“Vaccination has not been operated the way it should be”, he stressed.

Also speaking, the Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, said the new NRISP will scale up government’s efforts in preventable diseases through efficient immunisation programmes.

He observed that while diseases such as measles and polio have continued to pose challenges, government was putting in place a strategic framework that will bring about optimum results.

Chairman of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote,  urged the National Assembly to expedite action in passing the National Health Bill.

He also called for a proper funding of the health sector.

Also, the Representative of GAVI Alliance, Dr. Mercy Ahun, said the organisation was committed to the immunisation programme in Nigeria.

She said, “The GAVI Alliance is a public-private partnership with a mission to save lives by increasing access to life-saving vaccines and strengthening health systems. We have committed more than $700m to the immunisation programme in Nigeria and we expect a significant increase with additional new vaccines and health systems in the near future.”

The Executive Secretary, National Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr. Ado Muhammad, said the new plan provides details and data based on the best strategies needed to implement an accountable and effective immunisation programme.
